‘Yas Cyclone’ to cross the coast in a few hours. It is expected to cross the coast in a few hours near Balasore on Wednesday afternoon, the Meteorological Department said. Umashankar Das, a senior scientist at IMD in Bhubaneswar, said the winds would reach 130-155 kph as they crossed the coast.
It is located 40 km southwest of Dhamra in the northwestern Bay of Bengal and 90 km southwest of Digha. Odisha, West Bengal, and Jharkhand have been lashed by heavy winds since Wednesday morning due to the impact of the cyclone. CM Naveen Patnaik urged the people in the coastal areas of Odisha to cooperate with the administration.
CM Mamata Banerjee said 11.5 lakh people had been evacuated from Bengal in the wake of the cyclone. She said the secretariat would be available in Nabanna on the 26th to review the storm situation. Meanwhile, heavy rains on Tuesday damaged 80 houses in Hooghly and 24 northern districts.
Railways also alerted and canceled 38 trains in the wake of storm warnings. The Indian Navy has stepped up relief efforts to deal with the storm. Authorities said two Navy diving teams, five flood relief teams with specialized personnel with the necessary equipment and boats were on standby.
