Greco-Roman wrestler Sunil Kumar: India’s top Greco-Roman wrestler Sunil Kumar misses out on a chance to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics. Sunil (87kg) lost 5-9 to Sukrob Abdulkhev (Kyrgyzstan) in the Asian qualifiers semis here on Friday. If he had reached the final of this tournament, the Tokyo berth would have been perfect but he stopped just one step away.

Gyanender (60kg), Ashu (67kg), Gurpreet Singh (77kg), and Naveen (130kg) also lost in the semi’s. This caused great frustration in Greco-Roman. Indian star sprinter, Asian Games silver medalist Dyutichand won the ‘Veerni’ award. The Chattisgad state government has announced that she has been nominated for the award for excellence in sports. Dyuthi will receive the award at a virtual event on April 14 due to Corona.

The Chattisgad government has for the first time this year introduced the Veerni Awards to honor women who excel in various fields. Dyuthi won gold at the 2019 World University Games and she made history as the first Indian woman to achieve this feat. Currently working hard to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics.
