Major reasons for the shortage of vaccines in India? The vaccine was supplied to about 80 countries in India last year. From here, India has sent a few crore doses of vaccine to countries waiting to be handed over to the coronavirus. Many countries like the USA, Canada, Brazil, and Australia have thanked India for this. The World Bank also praised India.
Despite the coronavirus cases in the country, the Indian government has shown its Generous hand by sending vaccines to these countries. But now the situation has changed. Covid cases have been on the rise in the country since April after March. There is a shortage of vaccines in India at the same time.
Vaccine makers Serum Co. and Bharat Biotech have teamed up to increase vaccine production. However, compared to the past, the shortage of raw materials now plagues them more. Vaccines are not being produced according to the population of the country.
The main reason is that the government has not been able to finalize an advance purchase agreement with the producers. On December 20, the government was unable to place advance purchase orders despite the serum company offering 10 crore doses of vaccine at a discount for domestic consumption.
This is how the delay has been going on. Due to this, the serum company has postponed its target of producing 10 crore doses of the vaccine by last March. The Bharat Biotech company in Hyderabad has a similar problem. In order to vaccinate 35 crore people, 65 crore doses of vaccine have to be produced.
This problem has been partially solved by the lifting of restrictions on the export of raw materials that contribute to the production of vaccines.
