Sundarlal Bahuguna passed away on Friday with corona: He launched several movements against deforestation.
Prominent environmentalist and Chipko movement leader Sundarlal Bahuguna (94) has passed away. Bahuguna, who was suffering from corona, breathed his last on Friday while undergoing treatment at the AIIMS hospital in Rishikesh. Doctors said oxygen levels had been falling steadily since Thursday afternoon and that no matter how hard they tried, they could not save him.
Bahuguna has a wife Vimala, two sons, and a daughter. His funeral was held at Purvanand Ghat on the banks of the Ganges in Rishikesh with government ceremonies. President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Modi, and others expressed their condolences over the death of Bahuguna.
The President said that he had made environmental protection a people’s movement and a great chapter in this field had come to an end. The Vice President praised Bahuguna’s services as memorable and his inspiration to environmentalists. The Prime Minister lamented that India had lost a great man.
Aiming at the conservation of the Himalayan region,
Bahuguna has launched several movements against deforestation in the Himalayan regions. He led the Chipko movement for forest conservation, which began in the 1970s. It caught the attention of the world. Also fought against the construction of the Tehri Dam. Initiated fasting for 84 days. Many people were displaced due to this project. He was imprisoned for protesting against the Tehri royal family. Luxury tourism in the Himalayas is strongly opposed. It has been argued that building hotels there would cause serious damage to the local environment. Bahuguna was awarded the Padma Shri in 1981 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2009 in recognition of his services to the environment.
Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao expressed condolences over the death of Bahuguna. “For five decades, we have been campaigning against environmental issues and deforestation. Bahuguna expressed profound sympathy to the family members. Environment Minister Indira Reddy lauded Bahuguna for his efforts to create awareness among the people through the Chipko movement against deforestation.
Rajya Sabha member Joginapally Santosh Kumar mourned the death of Bahuguna. He recalled that he had fought tirelessly for the protection of the environment for five decades. He praised the Chipko movement against deforestation in the Himalayas for guiding environmentalists. He was hailed as an outstanding man who fought against the felling of trees. He said the Green India Challenge was inspired by environmentalists like Bahuguna.
