Koneru Humpy in Khel Ratna race: All India Chess Federation.
World Rapid Chess Champion Koneru Humpy has been nominated for the Rajiv Khel Ratna, India’s highest sporting award. The All India Chess Federation (IACF) has already announced today. It also said that seven other players have been nominated for the Arjuna Award. She excelled internationally in chess and became a grandmaster at a very young age.
At the age of 15, she became famous as a Grand Master in the season of 2002. Koneru Humpy is credited with bringing the game of chess to the masses. Gave some gap to the game in the middle. She then went on to become the World Rapid Chess Champion in the ring in 2019. Hampi also qualified for the 2022 Women’s Candidates Tournament.
Koneru Humpy’s currently ranked 3rd in the world. She is a member of the Indian team that won the 2020 Online Chess Olympiad title. Apart from Hampy, top players Bhamidipaati Sai Praneeth and Srikanth Kidambi have also been nominated for the Khel Ratna Award by the Badminton Association of India.
On the other hand, AICF has nominated Grandmaster Lalith Babu, Bhakti Kulkarni, Vidit Gujrathi, Sethuraman, Padmini Rout, and Adhiban for the Arjuna Awards. Saipraneeth won a bronze medal at the 2019 World Championships. Kidambi Srikanth won 4 Super Series titles in 2017. Pranav Chopra, Pranay, and Sameer Varma have been nominated for the Arjuna Awards. Along with them, coaches Muralitharan and Bhaskar Babu were nominated for the Dronacharya Award. Leroy Disa and PVV Lakshmi were nominated for the Dhyan Chand Award.
