Controversy over Modi’s surname. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has said that he has not made any remarks that could tarnish the image of Prime Minister Modi. Surat BJP MLA Poornesh Modi has filed a petition in a local court alleging that Rahul had insulted the Prime Minister in the controversy. Rahul, who appeared in court on Thursday in connection with the case, said he had never used such words.
It has been alleged that Rahul made remarks during a rally in Kolar, Karnataka, ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, in a bid to tarnish the image of Modi. Asked by the magistrate if he had alleged that Prime Minister Modi had given Rs 30 lakh to a businessman, he said, As a national leader, he said he would continue to work on issues such as corruption and unemployment. Asked if he had said today that not all people with Modi’s surname can steal, he said he did not use such words. To the rest of the questions, he answered that he did not know.
The magistrate adjourned the case till July 12. Speaking on the occasion of the Kolar rally in Logada, Rahul Gandhi mentioned how Nirav Modi, Lalit Modi, and Narendra Modi all have the same surname. He was then President of Congress. Meanwhile, Purnesh Modi has filed a petition in the Gujarat High Court seeking video and recording of the remarks. The case is set to go to court on Monday.
