Ban on wrestler Sumit: Champion of Commonwealth Games.
Ban on wrestler Sumit. Indian wrestler Sumit Malik, champion of Commonwealth Games caught for doping, has been banned. With this, the 28-year-old Haryana wrestler’s Olympics hopes are almost dashed. Although he has a week to appeal, the trial is unlikely to end before the Olympics. The Indian wrestler qualified for the mega event by competing in the 125 kg freestyle category at the World Olympic Qualifiers held in Sofia last month.
However, he was suspended after doping tests conducted during the competition revealed that he had taken banned stimulants. A recent ‘B’ sample was also tested and found to have taken stimulants. The United World Wrestling (UWW) on Friday imposed a two-year ban on him. Summit Malik, the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games champion, received the Arjuna Award, a sports award from the Government of India the same year. He was a runner-up and won silver medals at the 2017 Asian Championships in New delhi and the Commonwealth Games in Johannesburg.
